The Saint Vincent De Paul Society

The SVP is a group of Christian men and women who try to see and serve Christ in others. Members meet weekly in a parish group in order to help, in a personal way, those in need. There is no need which is outside the concern of the SVP, be it sickness or disability, mental or physical, family problems whether social or economic or the loneliness of old age. Members visit and befriend people in their own homes, hospitals and care homes.

If you would like further information or know someone whom we might help please contact Peter Jones via The Presbytery.

A brief message about the works done by the SVP from Peter Jones

"During the last year our SVP have regularly visited between 40 and 50 people in our parish to whom we provide companionship, transport, assistance with shopping, form filling, scheduling of appointments etc. We have helped families in unexpected emergencies and supported youngsters attending the St. John Bosco Camp and Lourdes pilgrimage.

All of these activities have involved the SVP in giving both practical and financial support.
Our visits to people in their own homes, nursing and residential homes and in hospital numbered 809 in the last year to 31st March. In the same period, members have volunteered 1298 hours of their time in this work, helping those in any kind of need in our own parish.
To ease the burden on church collections we appeal once a year . Everything that you donate to the second collection will be used to provide funds to help those in need in our own area".

SVP (St. Vincent de Paul Society)
The SVP is a worldwide organisation formed over 180 years ago by a student in Paris. He was challenged by his fellow non-Christian students to put his Faith into practise. So he went out on the streets of Paris and gave help to the poor, marginalised and isolated. The SVP now operates in 150 countries. We are inspired by the words of Jesus when he told us to “Love our neighbour as ourselves” and that “In so far as you do this to one of the least of these brothers of mine you do it to me.”
St. Joseph’s SVP meet on Wednesday’s at 830pm in the social centre during school term time.
Members regularly undertake visits to those in the parish in financial or other need that can be helped through befriending. The majority of those we visit suffer from the poverty of loneliness or isolation. We can help with shopping, transport etc but the main activity is listening and providing companionship. Members generally spend at least one hour a week in this work.
Over 20 parishioners are visited regularly in their own homes and another 20 in residential and nursing homes. We also get ad hoc requests to help from SVP Head Office and other SVP conferences.
Our meeting on a Wednesday evening comprises prayers and discussion about visits that we have made and how we can provide practical help in individual circumstances. The need for confidentiality is, of course, paramount in the work that we do.
The sums of money that we spend depend upon the needs arising and the material assistance that we can provide to families and individuals. It may be small amounts as a gift at birthdays or Christmas or larger amounts to help those who are homeless, unemployed or in short term difficulty.
In administering the money that is donated to us, we are mindful that we do not have a bottomless pit of funds and that we should be supporting people to get back on their feet through their own means and the help of social services.
Our annual church collection is the only guaranteed source of income and we are very grateful on behalf of those that we can help, for the unfailing generosity of the Parish each year.
If you know of someone that the SVP may be able to help or if you are interested in joining our work, then please contact the Parish Office and you will be put in touch with an SVP member who will contact you.
