The Order of the Knights of St. Columba

The Order of the Knights of St. Columba exists to support the mission of the Catholic Church.  It is a body of Catholic men giving entire loyalty to the Holy See, to the social teachings of the Church and to supporting its own members in their vocations and mission as Catholics.

The organisation was founded in Glasgow in 1919 in honour of St. Columba, a Christian missionary from Ireland, who helped to introduce Christianity to the British Isles.   It is dedicated to the principles of charity, unity and fraternity and has approximately 8000 member in 340 Councils across the U.K.   It is non-political and seeks to promote spiritual well-being.

Fundraising for charities plays a most important role in our activities and we very actively support St. Francis Hospice and the Marillac Hospital among other local charities.  We are also meeting the cost of the new Sunday Missal used by our priest on the altar and have recently purchased a Paten which is used to hold Eucharistic Bread for our sister parish, English Martyrs, the original having been stolen during a burglary last year.

The Upminster Council of Knights currently has 25 members, the youngest being 18 years of age and the oldest 85 years of age.   We are always looking to welcome new member and if you wish to know more please contact John O'Connor on 01708 446 268
