Celebrating the Centenary of our Parish Community

St Joseph's Centenary Festival on the Park - 23rd April

Picture
We are celebrating 100 years of our parish community with a community event open to all in Upminster Park, with (free) live music featuring Brentwood School Big Band, real ales by the Upminster TapRoom, and cream teas by Sweet Rose Cakery, as well as some fun inflatables.

We will be launching our online shop on Saturday 8th April, where you can pre-order inflatable wristbands and prize draw tickets - come back soon! These will also be on-sale after weekend Masses in the run up to the big day. Follow us on Facebook or check back here for updates on our plans.

Opportunities to get involved: we are looking for volunteers to help with event (setting up, clearing up, stewarding etc), as well as loan of gazebos and a van. We are also offering advertising space for local businesses in the event programme, and seeking prizes for our prize draw. Please contact the parish office on upminster@dioceseofbrentwood.org.

Why are we celebrating?

A new church dedicated to St Joseph was opened on 25th January 1923, to provide for the increasing Catholic population of Upminster. On 3rd October the same year, a new independent parish was formally created. 100 years later we are in a different building on a new site, but as we look to the future we also want to celebrate and give thanks for all that has gone before us. Our year of celebration began with Bishop Alan joining us for a Mass to mark the first of these dates. We want to share this celebration with the wider Upminster community, which is why we are holding the event on 23rd April.

Centenary Appeal

We hope to leave a tangible reminder of our centenary: our plans so far include a bell in one of the turrets to invite people to prayer and to chime the angelus morning, noon and evening; and to enhance the prayer garden between the church and school with a patio and statue of Our Lady.  We are looking to raise £15,000 in order to do this.

Parish Mission

The Sion Community will be coming to lead us in a Parish Mission in the first week of October. The mission will include a range of events encompassing all the diverse groups within our parish and offered at different times of the day in order to reach as many people as possible. It’s key aim will be to energise and unite the parish in a common sense of commitment to the gospel and the task of living and witnessing to our faith in Jesus Christ. More information will be shared nearer the time.
